I am a cleaning editor, and while I adore vacuums, I totally get it that most of you simply want to buy one vacuum that’ll last forever. It’s one of those needs every house—be it large or small—has, and one of those more grown-up purchases where you’d rather not spend as much as you need to while still reaping rewards for years to come
Homeinteriorspace has thoroughly tested over 350 vacuums, both in our dedicated lab and within our editors’ homes, from brands like Shark, Dyson, Bissell, Hoover, Levoit, Tineco, Kenmore, and more. Trust me when I say that there are plenty of vacuums out there that can get the job done on your floors and withstand routine bumps against table legs and baseboards. Our top pick delivers exceptional performance at just $200. (Vacuums can cost anywhere from $50 to $1,200.)
In this guide, we’re looking at the top three vacuum types that most home owners are going to be comparing: upright, stick, and canister vacuums. If you are shopping for a robot vacuum, vacuum-mop, carpet vacuum or something more under $200 check out our other roundups for those guides as well. No matter what your pick is, we are here to help you choose the best vacuum to keep your home spotless with just one click of “add to cart.”
Best Overall Vacuum
1. Levoit LVAC-200 Cordless Stick Vacuum
Category Stick Vacuums :
Stick vacuums are really light, agile, and easy to maneuver. Recently, they have become a big competitor to the traditional upright model, offering nearly the same level of suction as the former but the added convenience of a cordless design.

The Cordless Stick Vacuum by Levoit LVAC-200 is actually our top pick for the best overall vacuum. This vacuum model rivals, and even surpasses at times, more expensive models from other competing brands such as Dyson and Tineco. It even lacks some of those advanced smart features in order to deliver powerful suction and user-friendly functionality.
My house depends on it. It sometimes runs several times in a day for my little one’s snacking spills. And after a full house clean-up, it gets packed fully inside the dust bin, thus speaking of how good it performs. It holds a good performance though run daily by taking two clean-up sessions complete, and its battery needs a recharge. However, the whole process of detaching and charging separately has been kept pretty simple to do by removing the pack alone without charging the whole appliance.
A common criticism of stick vacuums is that they are less effective on carpets than upright or canister vacuums. But the Levoit LVAC-200 consistently leaves visible carpet lines, so it is capable. The full dust bin is evidence of its powerful suction.
Like most vacuums, some hair gets caught around the filter, but it is easy to remove. The dust bin comes off easily, and the filter can be twisted out to remove any tangles manually. To make it even easier, I would suggest using a wooden skewer to pull out debris.
The manufacturer’s guide recommends cleaning the pre-motor filters—the felt and foam filters—every month and replacing them every three months. I find that washing them occasionally is enough, and the process is quite simple. Removing, rinsing, and squeezing dry the filters significantly improves their performance. A replacement pack of two post-motor filters and four pre-motor filters can be had for under $25, which is a fantastic bargain compared to the cost of a single air purifier replacement filter.

2. Shark Stratos Upright Vacuum with DuoClean PowerFins HairPro
Category: Upright Vacuums
Upright vacuums provide the most suction of any vacuum type, making it a great fit for cleaning carpet and rugs in all piles. Before cordless stick vacuums entered the market, upright vacuums were the preferred choice because of their effectiveness; however, being bulky, heavy, and very difficult to navigate and store only added to this vacuum’s problem.

Of course, our favorite upright vacuum is the Shark Stratos Upright Vacuum. It perfectly fits the characteristics of a perfect upright vacuum: powerful, carpet-orientated yet excellent on various surfaces, and spacious despite its boxy build. The dust bin measures at about 0.37 gallons or nearly 47 ounces – the size of a Stanley cup. This can do multiple cleaning sessions without requiring frequent emptying, making it ideal for deep cleaning and pet owners.
This vacuum has two brush rolls that agitate surfaces and lift dirt and dust. In our testing, we saw it pick up hair, crumbs, flecks of dirt, and even fine dust particles from both carpet and hard flooring with ease.
Shark has alleviated the bulky nature of the vacuum with a lift-away pod. This allows for easy stair cleaning by taking out the handle and dust bin separately. With its 30-foot cord length, you can easily clean entire rooms and hallways without having to frequently switch outlets. While an automatic cord rewind would be fantastic, we didn’t find it overly cumbersome.
Shark is a top brand in the vacuum and appliances industry, offering high-quality products at competitive price points. You will likely find the best Dyson vacuum, Eureka vacuum, or the Shark Stratos on sale during the holidays and Prime Day, but even at full price, they are well worth the investment.

3. Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum
Category: Canister Vacuums
A canister vacuum is basically composed of two large parts: the canister and the handle. The canister, which usually has wheels for easy maneuvering, houses the dust bin or dust bag. The handle is connected to the vacuum using a hose, and on its end comes attached to the floor head. More versatile and portable, canister vacuums are suitable for pet houses as they possess a large amount of capacity in collecting dust, debris, and pet hair.

They also come with excellent maneuverability, allowing them to be more conveniently used to clean behind furniture, under couches, or other frequently used play areas. Miele has always been a leader in the market of canister vacuums, as the brand is known for its production of quality and durable models. The investment of Miele vacuums pays for itself with the reliability of service. One model that is putting out great performance is the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog Bagless Canister Vacuum.
The Miele CX1 maintains the canister by removing the accumulations of dust, thus leading to optimal working performance.
However, the power cord does not automatically extend while vacuuming, so the user has to pull out the required length before starting their cleaning session. Fortunately, the cord does retract automatically when finished. The vacuum offers multiple settings that effectively tackle messes on both hard floors and carpets.
The Miele CX1 also comes with five useful attachments. These are the crevice tool, upholstery tool, parquet twister floor head, handheld mini turbo brush, and electro plus floor head. The only downside is that it can get a bit messy emptying the dust bin, especially for those who are allergic to dust.
There are different variations of the CX1, but after testing, the Cat & Dog model turned out to be the best. However, considering its ability to handle pet hair and kibble, it could be used by non-pet households as well.

4. Kenmore Elite Cordless Stick Vacuum
Category: Lightweight Vacuums
I define a lightweight vacuum as any model that weighs less than 15 pounds, with an ideal target of around 10 pounds. Traditional upright and canister vacuums tend to exceed this threshold, but stick vacuums and compact options—such as handheld models—easily fit within these parameters. They also offer added conveniences that enhance maneuverability across various surfaces, including carpets and hard floors.
After extensive testing, the Kenmore Elite Cordless Stick Vacuum was the top pick within this category for us. Coming in at only six pounds — roughly the equivalent of two MacBook Pros — this is an unusually light vacuum. Beyond its lightness, though, this thing is quiet like a ghost. It also uniquely bends in half, making under-furniture cleaning nearly hassle-free as usual.

Although it is possible to set up the Kenmore Elite alone, an additional pair of hands may make things easier because the vacuum has to stay upright during the assembly process, which does tend to be a bit awkward.
Compared to other stick vacuums we’ve tested, this model offers well-balanced weight distribution once in use. Its cordless functionality grants you the freedom to move around for up to 40 minutes on a single charge—though heavy-duty settings, like max mode, tend to drain the battery faster than eco mode. At times, it may feel like the battery life runs out sooner than expected, but overall, it delivers reliable performance.
5. Bissell MultiClean Allergen Rewind Pet Vacuum
Pets introduce their own set of cleaning conundrums, and not all vacuums are engineered to rise to the occasion—though we’ve unearthed several top-tier selections adept at handling pet-related debris. Pet fur has an uncanny ability to adhere stubbornly to fabrics, weave itself into the fibers of your rugs, and entwine within your vacuum’s brush roll. Enter the Bissell MultiClean Allergen Pet Rewind, a corded upright vacuum meticulously crafted to combat these persistent nuisances.

Boasting an expansive 25-foot power cord, this device empowers you to traverse your living spaces effortlessly, while its dual attachments provide formidable assistance in dealing with fur, scattered kibble, and even non-pet-related detritus. Whether tackling plush carpets, hard flooring, or other surfaces, its robust suction capabilities are cloaked within a notably weighty design.
A standout feature, the Pet TurboEraser tool, is a game-changer for upholstery and carpeting, offering amplified cleaning potency—making it a compelling choice for pet households. Additionally, the crevice tool proves indispensable for reaching the nooks and crannies between couch cushions and other tight spaces, though it remains a quintessential vacuum staple.
